In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is important to increase your fertility by increasing the Qi of your Kidneys. If you are unfamiliar with TCM, it is based on Five Elements that corresponds to organs in the body. The basic theory of Chinese medicine is to create balance within the organs and more specifically the Qi, (pronounced “Chi”), or vital force that runs through each organ meridian. Channels that run through the body and connect to one another are known as meridians. Each meridian contains the Qi that can be either deficient, in excess, stuck or imbalanced. The premise of Chinese medicine relates to restoring deficient Qi, clearing excess Qi and creating smooth and balanced Qi. This becomes essential when preparing to conceive.

The Kidney Qi is what gives you your foundational energy and what is needed to give to the baby. When we look at the Qi of a particular meridian this leads to a further balance of Yin and Yang.  The Kidney Qi is broken down into Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang. Yin relates to the aspect of the Chi and organ that is cooling, relaxing, nourishing, soothing and restorative. Opposite to Yin is Yang, which is the drive, the heat, the fire, the ambition, the “go-go-go” energy of your body. It is important that both Yin and Yang are balanced. Deficiency or excess of either Yin or Yang create an imbalance and disharmony in the body leading to reduced function and disease. Because the Kidney Qi is vital in fertility and usually declines with age and chronic stress, it is one of the most important places to balance and tonify or build in relation to infertility. It is important to increase Kidney Yin and Yang as it can increase your ability to conceive.

Get enough rest. Rest and relaxation is where you have a chance for your Kidney Qi to so that you don’t deplete your Kidney Qi. Working long hours, “going-going-going”, excessive exercise or excessive sex all deplete your Kidney QI. Make sure your lifestyle speaks moderation and balance and get adequate sleep. Depleting the Kidney Qi speeds up the aging process and works against improving fertility. Adequate rest is important in building the Kidney Qi which in turn helps your fertility. Try to get at least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. If you struggle with sleep, talk to your doctor.

Meditation is about relaxing the mind and the body in creating a stillness in your busy “Yang type” life. Meditation allows time to be and replenish the Kidney Yin. Taking a few moments every day to either practice Chi gong, meditation, yoga or deep breathing to allow your Kidney Qi to rebuild and help nourish the Kidney Yin to help improve fertility outcomes.

Acupuncture can be used to build Kidney Yin, Kidney Yang, and Kidney Qi and create balance in other organs and meridians. Acupuncture can be very effective in building Kidney Qi and enhancing your fertility.
